STATUS
Grid Connection Is a Major Bottleneck
#WeStorix STATUS: 30th September 2025 @ 8:00 Am
WeStorix submitted Feedback on the European Grids Package Consultation in response to the European Commission’s call for evidence on the upcoming European Grids Package (initiative 14672):
Grid Connection Is a Major Bottleneck
WeStorix routinely experiences grid connection delays of over three years. Combined with excessively high connection fees, this undermines grid-supporting, climate-aligned projects. The Commission’s consultation highlights long connection queues as a strategic barrier to renewables integration; WeStorix’s delays illustrate the scale of the challenge.
WeStorix recommends:
- Require all standard grid connection applications to be processed within 6 months by law
- Enforce fee transparency and caps for connection costs
- Create an EU-backed mechanism for state guarantees or insurance to cover initial grid connection obligations for qualifying flexibility projects
- Create a mandatory Framework for TSO Acquisition of Private Grid Assets – Introduce an EU-level legal framework requiring TSOs to acquire or integrate privately developed grid connections and substations into the public transmission system, where such assets meet predefined technical and economic criteria. The framework should ensure transparent procedures, fair compensation, and regulatory certainty.
- Create a EU Incentive Scheme for Shared Private Infrastructure – Establish a Union-wide reimbursement mechanism for privately financed grid infrastructure that supports multiple users and alleviates public grid constraints – such as substations and transmission lines within energy campuses. Priority should be given to assets enabling system flexibility, renewable integration, and alignment with TEN-E and decarbonization goals.
