PRESS RELEASE
Pioneer in Green Energy Storage to Invest DKK 500 Million in Hirtshals Harbor
Hirtshals Harbor, October 3, 2024
Hirtshals Harbor’s green transition takes a significant step forward with the establishment of one of Denmark’s largest green energy storage facilities. WeStorix will build a storage facility for green energy at the harbor, contributing to the port’s ambitious plans to become a hub for the production and consumption of energy from renewable sources.
One of Denmark’s largest energy storage systems is being set up at Hirtshals Harbor. WeStorix is investing in an advanced energy storage facility that will benefit both local businesses and the local power grid. The new storage system will enable significant cost savings for companies with high electricity consumption while also reducing peak loads on the local grid, increasing stability in the North Jutland distribution network.
WeStorix’s total investment at Hirtshals Harbor amounts to DKK 500 million. In addition to DKK 275 million for the facility itself, the company will invest an additional DKK 225 million in ongoing costs over 20 years.
The agreement between WeStorix and Hirtshals Harbor highlights the port’s significant progress toward becoming Europe’s greenest harbor and a key hub for future sustainable energy. As a leader in energy storage, WeStorix is helping drive the transition to a more efficient and environmentally friendly energy system.
“We are proud to launch this ambitious initiative by establishing one of Denmark’s largest energy storage systems, with a capacity of 90 MWh, at Hirtshals Harbor. This project aligns with our mission to promote a sustainable future by integrating advanced energy storage technologies into the existing electricity infrastructure, supporting the harbor’s planned expansions. This will provide major energy consumers with a unique opportunity to achieve significant cost reductions while securing a green energy profile. WeStorix aims to enhance the utilization and competitiveness of renewable energy in the harbor area and improve grid stability in the Hirtshals region,” said Tony Breach, CEO of WeStorix, adding that he has received great support from the harbor during discussions over the past months.
Hirtshals Harbor is focused on attracting companies that want to collaborate with other players at the port on green energy. Therefore, the agreement with WeStorix fits perfectly with the harbor’s strategy and reinforces Hirtshals Harbor’s position in the green transition as a role model for national and international decision-makers.
“WeStorix is establishing itself at Hirtshals Harbor because they recognize that we are fully engaged in an ambitious project that will significantly impact the production and consumption of green energy in the coming years. The agreement underscores that we are an attractive partner, and companies see great advantages in setting up at Hirtshals Harbor. Earlier this year, for example, we signed an agreement with Norwegian Hydrogen, which is building a large facility for hydrogen production,” said Per Holm Nørgaard, CEO of Hirtshals Harbor.
Establishing a Smart Energy System at the Harbor
WeStorix’s solution helps renewable energy producers maximize their production capacity and make better use of electricity during periods of high production. The current and upcoming companies at the harbor are large electricity consumers, and they can achieve significant savings, support charging infrastructure for maritime vessels, and reduce their CO2 footprint by using a higher proportion of green electricity. The green power plant will support ongoing efforts to optimize the harbor’s energy systems and the creation of a so-called smart energy system.
“With this massive investment, we are moving closer to realizing our goal of making Hirtshals Harbor the greenest harbor in Europe. At the same time, the project supports our larger initiative to create a Smart Energy System, where surplus energy is reused in industrial symbioses at Hirtshals Harbor, as well as the CCUS project Greenport Scandinavia,” said Steen Harding Hintze, CEO of development company Greenport North, a catalyst for green transition and growth for both existing and new businesses at the harbor.
Hjørring’s Mayor and Vice-Chairman of the Hirtshals Harbor Board, Søren Smalbro, is also pleased with the agreement with WeStorix.
“In Hjørring Municipality, we have a clear strategy to support the green transition by ensuring that green energy is made available to both businesses and citizens. Hirtshals Harbor plays a central role in this, as it brings together different actors and creates synergies through close cooperation between companies. I see the establishment of WeStorix at the harbor as further proof that action is being taken to back up our words,” said Søren Smalbro.
WeStorix expects the facility at Hirtshals to become operational at the beginning of 2026.
Facts about the Green Power Station with Energy Storage at Hirtshals Harbor
– The 20MW green power station with a 90 MWh energy storage system can provide energy for more than 7,000 households for 24 hours or continuously power 3,500 households, as the storage will be refilled with green energy.
– The green power station, including the energy storage, will cover an area equivalent to two handball courts.
– The facility is expected to be built at Hirtshals Harbor during 2025 and 2026.
