STATUS
Enable Energy Communities for Industrial and Commercial Participants
#WeStorix STATUS: 9th September 2025 @ 8:00 Am
WeStorix submitted Feedback on the European Grids Package Consultation in response to the European Commission’s call for evidence on the upcoming European Grids Package (initiative 14672):
Enable Energy Communities for Industrial and Commercial Participants
National laws/regulations – such as those currently enforced in Denmark – prohibit large industrial consumers and renewable producers from forming or joining Energy Communities. This exclusion contradicts EU ambitions for decentralised energy ecosystems and limits private-sector contributions to grid flexibility and clean industry leadership.
The EU’s Grid Action Plan and follow-up stakeholder work emphasise Distribution System Operators (DSO) and community engagement as critical to unlocking distributed flexibility. Restrictive national eligibility rules work against these EU-level goals.
WeStorix recommends that the Energy Community framework be updated to explicitly allow participation by large industries, RE producers, and energy storage operators when organised in a grid-supporting ecosystem. Energy Communities should be open to any configuration that strengthens local balancing, system resilience, and decarbonisation.
